Exercise Of The Week: Alternating Kettlebell Press

Exercise Of The Week: Alternating Kettlebell Press

This is week # 2 of our Exercise of the Week Series. This week I have a great exercise that I don’t be seeing done a whole lot, the alternating kettlebell press. While this is a kettlbell exercise it can also be done with dumbbells.

Unlike a typical shoulder press the alternating kettlebell press forces you to keep one kettlebell locked out overhead.

This exercise improves strength endurance in the shoulders as well as core and shoulder stability. It is also a great exercise to overcome muscular imbalances in the upper body.

  • Assume athletic stance with kettlebells in the rack position
  • Press kettlebells overhead
  • Lower kettlebell to shoulder, keeping opposite arm extended overhead
  • Press kettlebell overhead
  • Repeat with opposite arm
  • Continue in alternating fashion for specified reps
  • Make sure to lock your legs out and squeeze your glutes throughout
  • Brace your abs and keep them locked in

Sets: 3

Reps: 6-10

  • Joe,

I love kettlebells and this is a great exercise. As a pitcher, I do not do alot of overhead pressing movements. When I do perform these type of movements I use light/moderate weight with moderate sets and reps.
