How To Kick Ass at 23 Years Old

How To Kick Ass at 23 Years Old

Yesterday was my 23rd birthday and I was fortunate enough to spend it with the people I care about the most in this world. A lot of people think it’s all down hill after you turn 21 or when you are in your mid 20’s but I have to disagree. The way I look at it is, I am one year older closer to achieving greatness and getting to where I want to be in my life.

You see, growing up I’ve always had my own vision of what I wanted with my life. When I was in college, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life but I knew I didn’t want to work in the corporate world, working some big dumb company and working towards achieving the goals of a CEO that I  didn’t know. Instead, I opted for the unconventional path, a path that is unknown mainly because it is up to me to create it. A path that too many guys and girls are afraid to take because they view it as too risky.

While I never knew what I wanted to do with my life, all I knew is I wanted to do something that I was passionate about and I wanted to work towards achieving my own goals I set for myself, not the goals of some dumb big company. People tell me all the time, “you are so lucky, I wish I was in your shoes when I was your age”. Let me tell you something, there is no such thing as being lucky.

You are “lucky” when you bust your ass to get to where you want to be and when you do what others refuse to do. We all have the opportunity to start our own business, spread our own message etc…but very few actually do this. Instead they take the safer route because they are afraid of failure. For me this simply isn’t the case. I know I am going be successful  I  don’t have a backup plan, in fact if you start coming up with all these different backup plans then you are already setting yourself up to fail.

When I was in college, I did what other college kids refused to do. Instead of going out and partying all the time, I was busy training in the gym, learning my passion and setting the foundation for my future. You see, in college they don’t teach you this kind of stuff. Instead, they teach you how to fit into the corporate world, something I wanted no part of. Almost every successful person I know I was self taught.

They are not where they are today because of their college education or because they got lucky or because somebody handed success to them on a silver platter. Instead, they are there because they realized they had the power to shape their own life and nobody was going stop them – not the government, the president of the USA, their family, their spouse or the haters. NOBODY.

When you stop listening to what everyone around you thinks is good for you, and you start listening to your own heart and gut, that is when you will start to be successful. Ultimately, only you know what you want in your life and it is up to you to find a way to get there. “A man can be as great as he wants to be. If you believe in yourself and have the courage, the determination, the dedication, the competitive drive, and if you are willing to sacrifice the little things in life and pay the price for the things that are worthwhile, it can be done.”– Vince Lombardi

A lot of people say to me “you got your shit together” and dam right I do. While I’m young and still make a lot of mistakes, that doesn’t stop me from  always pushing and moving forward. Each day that passes is one day closer to getting to where I want to be. Sure I’m going mess up, I’m young and make stupid decisions sometimes but that’s how you learn. Most people are too scared to make mistakes and mess up. I won’t let fear of failure stop me from getting to where I want to be.

If you are a young strength coach or just somebody who doesn’t know what the hell they want to do with their life, I want you to think deep about what it is you really want to do with your life, not what the people around you want for you, but what YOU really want. Your going have to work like a madman and be willing to do what most people aren’t willing to do but that is how you achieve success.

A few weeks ago, I came up with this quote:

The only thing that is standing between you and achieving greatness is yourself”Click To Tweet

  • Great post Coach Megz, I can definitely relate as I am in college right now and know what you mean. I train instead of going out, and always try get to get stronger by gaining more knowledge. It if course is not always not easy day in day out, but I pursue relentlessly and will never stop. Great post, and good quote you thought of as well.
