Sledgehammer Training for Baseball

Sledgehammer training

Sledgehammer training is an excellent conditioning tool for baseball players.  It trains grip strength, core, the lower body as well as the upper body. I like it especially for baseball players because it teaches baseball players them to be explosive and to use their whole body to produce force. Baseball players should not try to mimic their baseball swing! This will ruin your mechanics and teach you incorrect motor patterns.

How to incorporate it into your training?

Start with a lighter sledgehammer preferably 8-10lbs and either start with timed sets of 30 seconds (15 seconds each side) or start with sets of 10-15 each side. You can perform 3-4 rounds of this as a finisher to your workout.

You can also use it on off days as extra conditioning. It all depends on your goals and what you are trying to achieve.

How to perform it?

One of the best things about sledgehammer training is that it is EASY to teach.  Grip it, and rip it. Make sure you are getting your whole body into it and hit the tire as hard as possible.

Sledgehammer training is one of the best forms of explosive conditioning for baseball players.
